
Croatian regions hide many places that can be great destinations for a trip with children. Below we bring ideas for a day or weekend trip, giving a cross-section of all major Croatian regions.
If we start from Istria, we can first mention the Dinopark Funtana. It is the first Croatian show and theme park where children can learn a lot about dinosaurs. If you want to introduce children to the animal species of the Croatian underwater world, in Istria there are aquariums in Pula, Umag, Rovinj and Porec.
Very interesting localities are the Squirrel Forest near Umag and the first Istrian butterfly garden in Bale. It is possible to experience beautiful nature by visiting the Baredine cave and the Kamenjak peninsula.
One of the most famous destinations for children is the Brijuni National Park where there are a handful of facilities located in a unique natural environment. Do not forget the interior of Istria, where we emphasize the picturesque Motovun.
A wide selection of content for children is completed by the Višnjan Observatory, which offers top programs for learning about astronomy. Those who want real excitement and fun can visit Aquapark Poreč and Aquapark Istralandia near Novigrad.
KVARNER
Kvarner is a particularly interesting region because it connects the sea and the mountains. Those who want a mountain climate and a stay in the fresh air can head to Platak or simply visit various mountain places in Gorski Kotar. Special mention should be made of the Risnjak National Park as a place for rest and play.
If your child prefers the sea and the beach, then you can head to the Opatija Riviera. You will get to know Opatija and other picturesque places in Kvarner.
There is also the Crikvenica Riviera where the town of Crikvenica is known as a place with many facilities for children and along which you can get to know other coastal places, including Novi Vinodolski.
A visit to the islands always brings a large number of contents, so a visit to Krk, Cres or Mali Lošinj is recommended.
Don’t forget the famous Children’s Carnival Parade, which is held in Rijeka every year in February.
LIKA
In Lika is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is a world attraction. The Northern Velebit and Kuterevo National Parks, which are a well-known refuge for bears, are certainly worth mentioning.
In Smiljan, near Gospić, there is the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center, where prototypes of Tesla’s inventions are exhibited. It is a place where “little scientists” can learn a lot about the life of a famous inventor and innovator.
In Lika, it is also recommended to visit the town of Otočac and get to know the “little ones” for grinding grain along the river Gacka, Klanac and Majer’s spring in Sinac.
SLAVONIJA
In Slavonia, there is the Kopački rit nature park, which with its large number of animal species and ornithological reserve will surely intrigue children. An indispensable place for a trip with children is the Papuk Nature Park.
It is recommended to visit Đakovo, where the State Stud Farm Đakovo with playful Lipizzaners is located. Ilok with its beautiful medieval core should also be mentioned.
Osijek is the center of Slavonia which has a lot of quality facilities. In Vukovar, you should definitely visit the Eltz Castle and the Homeland War Memorial Center as a place for education.
DALMATIA
The cities of Split, Dubrovnik, Šibenik and Zadar are unforgettable destinations for a trip with children because of its rich cultural heritage. The famous International Children’s Festival is held in Šibenik every summer.
A special experience is a visit to the Krka National Park and the Biokovo Nature Park as a habitat for many endemic plants and animal species.
The youngest will surely be attracted by the “ziplines” near Omis and the Fun Park Mirnovec (“Croatian Gardaland”), near Biograd na Moru. We also suggest the sandy beach Sakarun on Dugi Otok and the Falconry Center near Šibenik.
CENTRAL CROATIA
Central Croatia covers a wider area of continental Croatia. In Međimurje, you should definitely visit the Zrinski Park – the old town in Čakovec. The Dragon Garden in the municipality of Štrigova is beautiful, and the Accredo center (adventure park) in Zasadbreg is a great place for adrenaline fun.
You will experience a fairytale trip with children in the Trakošćan castle. There is no less experience in the castle Veliki Tabor, Gornja Stubica where you can see the old Gupčeva lipa and visit the Museum of Peasant Revolts.
The picturesque town of Ogulin has the Klek mountain, the Frankopan castle and Ivana’s fairytale house, which children simply have to visit in order to meet the literary world of Ivana-Brlić Mažuranić.
Zagreb as the capital offers a wide range of facilities for children, has a large number of theaters, cinemas and museums. Especially interesting for children are the Zagreb Zoo and Maksimir Park. The surroundings of Zagreb are hidden by the Zagreb Ethno Park and the Žumberak Nature Park.
